Sciatica
Sciatica is an umbrella term that describes a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve pathway, typically from the lower back down through the buttocks and legs. An irritation to the sciatic nerve is usually the cause of the pain and can be experienced in many different ways but generally a sharp, sudden electric shock type pain or the other extreme of discomfort or numbness.
Despite popular opinion, you don't necessarily need lower back pain to have Sciatica; you can have symptoms and leg pain in your lower limb without back pain. Sciatica common causes can be:
1) Compression and irritation of the nerve roots close to your spine by issues like a herniated disc or inflammation causing increased pressure on the nerves.
2) Compression and irritation of the sciatic nerve, which passes through your buttocks and travels down your leg. This can be caused by a muscle irritating the sciatic nerve as it passes through it.
Our treatment of Sciatica targets exercises, manual therapies, education and hands-on treatment, which aims to alleviate pain, improve mobility and enhance overall function through soft tissue release and stretching techniques, which help to reduce muscle tension and relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Techniques Used to Treat Sciatica
Addressing relief from sciatica pain, we start by thoroughly assessing your medical history and symptoms. Then, we will use personalised techniques, such as gentle manual therapies and nerve gliding exercises, to relieve nerve compression and increase mobility. Strengthening exercises for the core and hip muscles will also be integrated to stabilise your spine and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. Plus, you'll receive valuable education on ergonomic improvements and postural adjustments to prevent future pain.
