Frozen Shoulder
A frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain, stiffness and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and progresses through three stages: freezing, frozen, and thawing. The exact cause of a frozen shoulder is not well understood but it can occur following an injury or trauma to the shoulder, prolonged immobilization or due to certain medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders or autoimmune diseases.
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the treatment of a frozen shoulder. The primary goal of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, increase shoulder mobility and restore function. Here are some common treatments a physiotherapist may provide:
- Range of motion exercises: Gentle stretching and range of motion exercises are prescribed to improve flexibility and restore mobility in the shoulder joint. These exercises are usually performed under the guidance of a physiotherapist to ensure they are done correctly and safely.
- Strengthening exercises: Strengthening the muscles around the shoulder joint can help support the joint and improve stability. The physiotherapist may recommend specific exercises targeting the rotator cuff muscles and other shoulder muscles to improve strength and function.
- Manual therapy: The physiotherapist may use manual techniques such as joint mobilizations, soft tissue massage or stretching to reduce pain, release tight tissues and improve shoulder mobility.
- Hot and cold therapy: Applying heat or cold to the shoulder can help reduce pain and inflammation. The physiotherapist may use heat packs, ice packs or alternate between the two to provide relief and promote healing.
- Electrical modalities: Certain electrical modalities like ultrasound or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may be used to provide pain relief, improve circulation and promote tissue healing.
It's important to note that our treatment approach may vary depending on the severity of the frozen shoulder and individual patient factors.
Techniques Used to Treat Frozen Shoulder
When addressing the challenging condition of a frozen shoulder, we employ a structured approach designed to alleviate pain and restore range of motion. We would customise a range of techniques to your specific needs, including gentle manual therapies such as joint mobilisations and myofascial release to reduce stiffness and improve joint mobility. Progressive stretching exercises targeting the shoulder capsule and surrounding muscles are introduced to gradually increase the range of motion.
