Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) occurs when the spinal cord gets damaged. The damage to the spinal cord might be complete or incomplete and can happen form a range of reasons, such as; from a Road Traffic Incident, falls, sporting injuries, or from a disease, such as Polio, Spinal Bifida or Transverse Myelitis.

Depending on the level of Spinal Cord Injury and if it is complete or incomplete, the problems associated can include:

  • Muscle weakness/paralysis
  • Reduced ability to breathe
  • Loss of general mobility and balance
  • Loss of functional movement
  • Poor posture
  • Pain

Assessment

The physiotherapist will take a history and conduct a physical examination.

Diagnosis

The findings will then be discussed with you and a diagnosis made.

Treatment Plan

A treatment plan will be compiled taking into consideration your goals and expectations. The physiotherapist will discuss prognosis and any further investigation that they feel you may need.

Physiotherapy

Your treatment will commence. This may include manual therapies such as mobilisation or massage, pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatment.
